The first English team to embark on a ship set sail from Liverpool in 1859. The first clear reference to cricket is part of a deposition given in a court in Guildford in 1598, which states that creckett was played on common land around 1550. It is believed to have originally been a children’s game which later became an adult pastime. The first reference to a match between communities places it around 1610, while the first death in the sport’s history is recorded in 1624 when, during a match between two community teams in Sussex, the ball hit Jasper Vinall on the head, killing him instantly. Numerous references demonstrate the development of the sport in southeastern England during the 17th century. By the late 17th century, cricket had become an organized activity, with the first professionals making their appearance in the years following the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660. Gambling played a significant role in the development of cricket, with wealthy patrons organizing select elevens which played for large sums of money.

The style of throwing changed around 1760, when cricketers stopped rolling the ball towards the batsman like in bowling and started aiming for the ground, “stumping” the ball in front of him. This in turn introduced the straight bat in place of the curved stick like that of hockey. In 1787, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) was founded to quickly become the most important club and guardian of the laws of the sport.

The 19th century saw the spread of the throwing style with the hand extended at shoulder height, followed by its replacement by the throwing style with the hand over the shoulder. Both developments were controversial. In the same century, the county championship appeared, which continues to this day in the form that was institutionalized in 1890. The game was also made popular in other parts of the world by the expansion of the British Empire. The first English team came to Australia in 1862, and an Aboriginal stockmen-only squad from Australia made its way to England in 1868.
